Frequently
Asked Questions
What is the
Next Stage Ensemble?
The Next Stage
Ensemble , which marks its 16th year in 2008, is one
of several exciting outreach programs offered by The Shakespeare
Theatre of New Jersey. The Ensemble was created in 1992 as
part of the Summer Professional Training Program,
and fosters the work of early career actors and directors.
Each summer, the Next Stage Ensemble brings the
thrill of a live performance to audiences throughout the State
of New Jersey while enabling young performers to gain valuable
experience in classical theatre and ensemble work.
What does the
Next Stage Ensemble do?
During the summer
months, Ensemble members take advanced classes in voice and
movement, and perform fully developed productions of abridged
classic plays for audiences of all ages, with a special focus
on those who are unable to travel. The company visits hospitals,
retirement communities, libraries, bookstores, camps, schools
and community centers. In 2008, the Ensemble also performs
in its 14th annual Picnic Series, which offers free
outdoor performances on the lawn of the F.M. Kirby
Shakespeare Theatre in Madison, on the campus of Drew University.
This valuable touring experience allows the young actors to
hone their skills before a variety of different audiences.
What is a Next
Stage Ensemble Performance like?
Each summer, the
Next Stage Ensemble rehearses two fully-developed productions
of abridged classic plays under the direction of The Theatre's
professional staff and guest artists. Careful adaptations
preserve the integrity of the author's language, while reducing
the running time to about 60 minutes.
Because the Ensemble
performs primarily at non-traditional venues, rather than
at theatres, it tours with only minimal sets and costumes
and without special lighting equipment, much as an Elizabethan
traveling company would have done. In traditional fashion,
actors typically perform in multiple roles, and rely upon
the text and their craft to create theatrical "magic."
Who are
the members of the Next Stage Ensemble?
Ensemble members include
selected graduates of The Theatre's Apprentice Company, as
well as gifted newcomers. Frequently, Ensemble members are
recent graduates of undergraduate theatre programs
from around the region and the country. Admission to this
highly selective program is by audition or invitation only.
EMC (Equity Membership Candidate) points are available.
How many
performances does the Next Stage Ensemble give each
summer?
In the summer of
2006, the Ensemble gave 58 performances to over 3,000 audience
members throughout New Jersey.
How much
does it cost to host a performance?
For 2008, a single
performance by the Next Stage Ensemble is $350. Non-profit
organizations qualify for a discounted rate of $275.
Additional charges
for travel (currently $10-125) apply for locations over 5
miles from Madison, NJ.
What are

turning out to be a wildly anticipated and successful annual
event."

were so professional and well-rehearsed, you would have thought
they were doing it for years."
"The
